  2. Final Essay •.•

What is good about South Central is that it has good schools and great businesses. A couple of things that can be improved about South Central is the drug use and violence. Overall, I do like attending school here in South Central. Also, I do like living here in South Central. The three most important events that have had the greatest impact on making South Central, LA what it is today was the Watts Riots, Gang History, and the Crack Epidemic.

The first event that has made South Central what it is today was the Watts Riots. It is important because if the riots wouldn’t have happened we probably wouldn’t be here learning about the history of South Central. The Watts Riots began on the evening of August 11, 1965. It lasted for 5 days, and it resulted with 34 deaths and 118 people wounded by gunshots. The damages resulted in over $40 million in damages. This included the whole disaster of 103rd street burning down to bits which is also nicknamed Charcoal Alley. I chose the Watts Riots as a great impact to South Central because it helped construct our community. When they studied the riots a reason why it started was because they had bad schools and education. By this being a purpose of the riots it lead to better schools being constructed. Two schools were constructed and they where Southwest College and Locke High School.

The second event that has made South Central what it is today is the Gang History. This is important because it is the cause if all the violence in our community. Before this time gangs were made for a good cause. Blacks and Latinos made gangs to protect themselves from racist whites. Through time once the white flight happened most of the black gangs started to rebel upon each other. Then two organizations where formed and they here formed for a good cause. The Black Panthers and the Brown Berets where organizations to make Black and Brown communities have better rights. The Black Berets were socialist that had the major goal to end police brutality. The Brown Berets where groups if kids from various schools that wanted better education and to be treated fairly in school. These groups where very successful until the COINTELPRO ( a government organization) destroyed these successful organizations. Once this happened many gangs started to form. The Bloods, the Crips, and the 18th street gangs started to form. They all started in having the same goal as the Black Panthers and Brown Berets but then they started rebeling against each other. I chose Gang History as being a great impact on South Central because it brought violence into our community. If the government didn’t stop the Brown Berets and the Black Panthers we probably wouldn’t have any violence and our community would be peaceful.

Lastly the third event that made South Central what it is today was the Crack Epidemic. This is important because this event brought drugs into our community and they stayed here. The Crack Epidemic started in the 1900s in Nicaragua. The U.S.A started to give Nicaraguans money to fight the Sandinistas. The problem was that the U.S didn’t have this type of money so they decided to sell crack cocaine. They ended up selling it to South Central, LA. The main drug dealer in South Central was Freeway Ricky Ross. His main connection was Dinirio Blandon. When Freeway Ricky Ross was selling drugs he really didn’t know that he was tearing many families apart. Overall i chose the Crack Epidemic as being a great impact on South Central because if the CIA had never brought in the drugs the whole Watts community would be sober.

The three greatest impact on South Central was the Watts Riots, the Gang History, and the Crack Epidemic. The Watts Riots greatest impact for South Central is that it lead to the construction of Locke High School. The Gang History greatest impact on South Central was that it lead to dangerous gangs being formed and violence being part of this community. Lastly, the Crack Epidemic greatest impact towards South Central is that it brought drugs into this community and this increased to people dieing because of the over use. Also it drives many families apart. I think that in the future of South Central will change. I think that in the future many people will open their eyes and see what damage they are putting on each other and the people they love. There are smart people in this community and i know that they can have the responsibility to do whats right for them and do something good for this community.

:] I Believe That One Day South Cenral Will Be Spoken Of But In Good Manners. :] <3

  3. Elaine Brown was born on March 2, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. When she joined the Black Panther she was a rank-and-file member. She sold newspaper and she cleaned guns for the group. One accomplishment from Elaine is that she was the first women chairman of the group when Newton fled to Cuba. She was a great leader because she was able to complete big responsibilities in her hands.

  4. Next Unit

    • One interesting thing i learned was that there was a house on 79th street and it brought up to 70 people to it because it was a crack house.
    • Another interesting thing was about the Slausons. The protected South Central from white gangs in Huntington Park and South Gate.

  5. Unit Reflection >.<

The grades i would give to both Yola and Blurb is an ‘A’. I would give them an A because they let you customize it by your style. What went well in this unit was that me got to express ourself in them and also it was very interesting working with them. Nothing can make these units better.

  7. South Central Change!

One way that South Central changed was that many places back then don’t exist no more. Also that the area around changed a lot. The places that i looked at they where all different. What it shows me is that many people couldn’t go to many places. They could either go to places near by or some places that are far from where they live. Some shops are more on Central and also Avalon. Over all i think that South Central has changed alot and it isnt the same as it was back then.
